Doc has recently looked at his own past with regard to his painting style and has realized that another of his artistic ambitions is to become recognized as a muralist. He enjoys painting large paintings; he likes multiple images in his paintings; he loves for his paintings to tell a story, and each of these qualities lend themselves well to painting murals.

In an attempt to kick off this new found dream of becoming a muralist he has taken on an exciting challenge. He is painting a mural which depicts movie stars from the 20's, 30's, 40's and on up. This mural is being painted in a long hallway in the "Sunshine Terrace" care facility in Logan, Utah, in the "Memory Lane" wing for those residents suffering with Alzheimer's disease.

The mural pictured here, is 4 feet tall and 35 feet wide. Click on the image to see a larger view of it.

In this picture Doc has about 18 hours into the project having done not quite 10% of 65 faces to be painted.

As shown in the picture below, Doc takes a portion of the entire mural and lays out the position of each rectangle containing a portrait.

The positions are mapped out and measured and printed on a regular sized piece of paper. Doc then transfers these measurements to the large canvas. At that point a drawing of the person is transferred into the corresponding rectangle, then each face is painted with oil.

On June 18th, 2010, Doc finished the mural at Sunshine Terrace Skilled Care Facility in Logan, Utah. He began painting it in September of 2009 and spent about 26 hours designing it and 235 hours painting.

Yul Brynner was the final face to be painted and to mark the occasion, Doc created this animation showing the painting of that face. You can also click here to view the actual video on YouTube which lasts about 8 seconds.

In April of 2010 "The Valley Channel", Logan's local television Station recorded a brief interview with Doc about the mural, its purpose and a little about the artist. To view the video on YouTube just click HERE.

Doc is now seeking mural commissions. His charges for a mural will be determined as the various projects are presented to him.
